Willem de Kooning Academy

Contemporary and cutting-edge education

The Willem de Kooning Academy offers contemporary and cutting-edge art courses that complement changing, international practice. The outside world is no longer looking for the autonomous artist or the graphic designer, but rather for people who possess a multitude of talents and skills and who look beyond the borders of their original discipline. These are ‘creating pioneers’. The speed and complexity of technological developments strongly influence contemporary and future professional practice. Our students will work both at local and at international levels with professionals from different disciplines in open and virtual settings.

Personal development

We create a setting in which you can develop and broaden your interests. You can choose different ways of working, the type of assignment that suits your style of learning, and how to develop your talent. The whole learning process may be different for each individual student, but the degrees that you earn are equal. You will attend theory classes that are appropriate to your level at the time and you will be part of an elective program. It is important that you do not only choose a particular study program – let’s say Design – and a major – let’s say Advertising – but also a professional role and a professional context with a corresponding internship and a minor program. You can also enter an honors program and/or complete your graduation specialization by choosing an exchange program at an academy or university abroad. This gives you the opportunity to adopt the academy’s education program to your own preferences and to the development of your own talent.

Study career coaching

While a student at WdKA, a study career coach will monitor your progress and help you make your personal study choices. Your study career coach will help you prepare for your life as a professional. Together you will decide your choices and the course that your studies will take.

Rotterdam Onderwijs Model (ROM)

The Willem de Kooning Academy is one of the 14 institutes of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and works with the Rotterdam Onderwijs Model (ROM – Rotterdam education model). This model differentiates between knowledge-driven, practice-driven, and student-driven educational activities cq. aims & goals.

Majors & practices

On top of your major, let’s say Advertising&Beyond or Fine Art, your study will also comprise elective minors. You may choose from a wide range of contemporary subjects and issues. It will introduce you to the three graduation profiles: Autonomous Practices, Social Practices, and Commercial Practices. The choice of minors is limited in your first year, but as you progress they will play an increasing part in your degree program. Thus, you will study both within your own subject and within the Practices. You will work on real assignments and can gain practical experience during an internship and exchange. Ultimately, you will compile your own broad package of knowledge, skills, and specialties. When you graduate, you will have a unique body of professional practice that will make you stand out in the labor market, in the creative sector, or in the art world.

Portfolio checklist

What: A selection of 10-15 works which were preceded by a creative process For example designs, objects, photos, films, games, animations, fashion (accessories), furniture, models, drawings, posters, campaigns, paintings, usable artifacts, and sculptures. You can publish and present all of this in a neat traditional portfolio folder, but you can also use different methods: 3D work can be brought in a (cardboard) box, digital work can be presented on a laptop or tablet.

Please note: apart from these works, please show us some other things you created. Make a careful selection between the two. That way, we can assess to what extent you have an insight into your own qualities and your own work. On admission days, we will look for and assess: – your expressive and creative abilities; – your feeling for color, form, and material; – originality and inventiveness in your work. Your portfolio, sketches, and other works that you bring need to give us these insights. So please check whether you show both your full capacity and potential, as well as a personal and specific fascination for your preferred major and preferences for (for example) materials, techniques, themes, and concepts.

How: Sketches, tests, try-outs, and experiments Bring sketchbooks, collections of ideas, scrapbooks, coasters with inventions drawn on the back, material experiments, prototypes, scale models, test prints, and first versions. All of this can be related to the 10-15 works mentioned above. We would like to gain insight into your design and creating process. We would like to see how you came to create a final version or design through sketching, trying, testing, and experimenting first. We would like to see that you are able to challenge yourself and to further explore your first ideas. It is important for us to see: – you can critically reflect on your work and challenge yourself; – you see and observe the world around you and react to whatever you notice; – if and how you are self-directing and self-learning and able to make choices; – if and in what way you have created potential and can communicate through images.

Why: Online questionnaire about your ambitions and motivation After your application, we will send you a login code for an online questionnaire. We would like to know more about your choice of major and what you think you can expect from us. Who inspires you? What would you like to learn from us? Please print out your questionnaire and bring it with you during the admission day. We will discuss with you in person your questions and ambitions.
