Introduction

The Zoology MBiol, BSc programme at the University of Leeds is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills to address critical global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity conservation. Throughout the course, students will explore a wide range of topics, including animal physiology, behaviour, and the impact of evolution and environment on species. The programme emphasises hands-on learning through practical and fieldwork experiences, allowing students to investigate the effects of climate change on wildlife and develop sustainable livestock production methods.A unique feature of this programme is the integrated Masters (MBiol), which provides an additional year of specialist training focused on advanced research skills. Students can also opt for a three-year BSc and transfer to the MBiol programme based on academic performance. The course includes field courses in diverse habitats across the UK and optional international experiences, such as studying sustainable urban ecology in South Africa. In the final year, students will conduct a research project, gaining valuable experience in scientific inquiry and data analysis. The curriculum is research-led, covering advanced topics such as genetics, conservation science, and animal behaviour. The Faculty of Biological Sciences offers state-of-the-art facilities, including the National Pig Centre and access to field research stations in Europe and Africa. The programme also promotes flexibility, allowing students to transfer between related biology degrees after the first year. With a strong emphasis on practical skills, teamwork, and problem-solving, graduates will be well-prepared for various careers in conservation, environmental consultancy, and academic research. The course is accredited by The Royal Society of Biology, ensuring a high standard of education and recognition in the field.
