Introduction
The BA Social Work programme at the University of Leeds is designed for students who aspire to make a positive impact on society. This three-year full-time course combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for a rewarding career in social work. The programme includes mandatory work placements, providing students with 170 days of direct experience in various social work settings, including both adults and children and families sectors. Innovative teaching methods, such as simulated court experiences and home visits, enhance the learning process, allowing students to engage with real-world scenarios. A specialist module focuses on the digital aspects of social work, addressing both the benefits and ethical dilemmas associated with technology in practice. The course is structured to develop reflective practitioners who can advocate for service users effectively. Students will learn about the legal framework of social work, sociology, and social policy, as well as the impact of disability and mental health on service users. The curriculum is designed to foster professional competence in decision-making, ethics, and diversity. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of social work theory and practice, while the final year prepares them for statutory placements and assessed employment. The degree is accredited by Social Work England, enabling graduates to register and practice as social workers. The University of Leeds also offers opportunities for study abroad, enhancing cultural perspectives. Overall, this programme equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the dynamic field of social work.
