Introduction
The Film Studies BA at the University of Leeds offers a comprehensive exploration of global film culture, focusing on film form, style, and its political significance. Students will engage with a diverse range of world cinemas, moving beyond the traditional Hollywood narrative. The programme combines compulsory and optional modules, providing an in-depth understanding of historical, theoretical, and critical approaches to film studies. Students will benefit from the expertise of faculty members in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, allowing for a rich exploration of cinema from various cultures, including French, German, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese films.The course is delivered in a research-intensive environment, encouraging students to participate in activities organised by the Centre for World Cinemas and Digital Cultures. Throughout their studies, students will develop essential skills such as critical thinking, independent research, and effective communication. Opportunities for a work placement year or a study abroad year are also available, enhancing the learning experience.Leeds is an ideal location for film studies, with access to the Leeds International Film Festival and independent cinemas like the Hyde Park Picture House. The programme highlights staff expertise in emerging cinemas, decolonisation, LGBTQ cinema, and film theory, among other areas. Students will have access to specialist facilities, including a lending library of foreign-language films and extensive resources in the University library's Special Collections.The curriculum is structured to introduce students to key concepts in their first year, followed by critical frameworks and methodologies in the second year. In the final year, students will undertake an independent research project, which can be presented as a digital documentary or podcast. The course employs a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, and independent study, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
