Introduction
Are you intrigued by living organisms invisible to the naked eye? Do you have a mind that is both curious and methodical? Do you like to stay on the lookout for new techniques and discoveries? Are you interested in research and graduate studies? Our Bachelor of Science with Joint Major in Biochemistry-Microbiology is the ideal option!
The students who take our program enjoy observing, discovering, understanding, reasoning and explaining the world around them. They are interested in living things and laboratory experiments captivate them. A bachelor's degree with a joint major in biochemistry-microbiology directly opens the doors to research and graduate studies in science. It can also facilitate the transition to a limited program, such as medicine, or provide access to the labor market. Studying science in French is a great way to position yourself as a researcher on the national and international scene.
duration
4-year full-time program. Leads to a Bachelor of Science degree with a joint major in biochemistry-microbiology.
Program overview
The Bachelor of Science degree with a joint major in biochemistry and microbiology enables students to acquire superior knowledge about the functioning of life on a microscopic scale and to develop advanced skills in the laboratory.
Biochemistry: Studies the chemical reactions within living things, especially in cells. Discover the building blocks of life: DNA, RNA, proteins and other biomolecules.
Examples of courses offered:
- Organic chemistry
- Inorganic chemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
- Biophysical chemistry
- General biochemistry
- Biochemistry of nucleic acids
- Biochemistry of proteins
- Spectroscopy
Microbiology: Studies microorganisms: protozoa, algae, fungi, bacteria and viruses.
Examples of courses offered:
- Microbiology
- Microbial diseases
- Molecular biology
- Immunology
- Virology
- Genetics of prokaryotes
- Biological energy
Research project
In the last year of the program, you have the opportunity to carry out your own research project in chemistry, biochemistry or microbiology under the direct supervision of one of our professors. Your project can be done on USB or at another site, such as the National Microbiology Laboratory.
Our program is distinguished by the use, from the first year, of modern and sophisticated equipment. Come learn various advanced techniques in our new microbiology laboratory by doing your own manipulations and experiments!
The school has two admissions: one in September for all programs and one in January for university programs only. However, between May 1, 2022 and July 1, 2022, Canadians will still be able to register for the start of the September re-entry, while internationals will have to wait until the next re-entry, either in January 2023 or September 2023, according to their program.
Additional information
The joint major in biochemistry-microbiology is the most advanced program in the Faculty of Science. If you want more general science training, enroll in the general baccalaureate in science instead.
Cooperative component
Up to five motivated, autonomous and bilingual students can choose the cooperation option and complete three to four paid four-month internships in industry, laboratories or government organizations (University of Manitoba internship bank ). These concrete work experiences will allow you to develop a professional network made up of researchers and scientists while giving you a huge advantage in the job market by rubbing shoulders with potential employers. The cooperative component represents an additional year of study.
Do scientific studies in French! Think about the advantages of being bilingual on the Canadian and international scene: networking, dissemination of research in both languages, attractive employment and salary!
