Teaching and learning

Students engage in learning in a variety of ways to match their diverse skills and learning styles. The emphasis on experiencing tourism management creates the need for additional learning environments such as learning in work through work experience and volunteering, engaging with the industry through visits, guest speakers, and a residential to supplement the more traditional approaches of lectures, guest speakers, tutorials, workshops, seminars and VLE's to complement and enhance the traditional, face-to-face learning experience. Knowledge and skills are developed through case studies, role-plays, simulations, presentations, projects (work-based and academic), reflective portfolios, and the extended use of technology-supported activities. There is much emphasis on employer engagement, and innovative and research-informed teaching to enrich the student experience.

The knowledge and skills learned in core modules at the start of the award will be transferred, re-applied and developed in related modules and at higher levels. In the first year, tourism business fundamentals are examined, to develop an understanding of the integrated nature of tourism business together with an introduction to tourism and events. This knowledge is expanded to focus more closely on tourism in year two. Tourist destinations leisure and culture, tourism and events service operations management, and new media tourism and events marketing are studied and students will also have the opportunity to undertake a residential tour to an innovative tourism destination to observe firsthand how the concepts of tourism management are implemented and applied. In the final year of study, students conduct a tourism management project and explore contemporary issues in tourism and events alongside a dedicated marketing module. Throughout the learning journey, the critical intellectual development of students is fostered.

Students are encouraged to become very self-aware: to reflect on their progress, to identify where their potential lies, and to plan for future personal development and growth.

Students are guided through their studies via a teaching support network of module tutors, personal tutors, award leaders and supporting academic and business managers, and dedicated and involved support and pastoral staff. Students act in partnership with module deliverers and personal tutors to develop an evolving body of knowledge and portfolio of skills which:

  • Encourages active learning and confidence to learn
  • Stimulates intellectual curiosity and excitement in learning through engagement with up-to-date and contemporary, well-researched subjects.
  • Encourages critical reasoning about the world of business to achieve well-informed judgments and conclusions, In addition, our learners will have the opportunity to:
  • Engage with complex, challenging problems and real-world issues
  • Use available resources proactively, technical, digital, and paper-based to address problems, construct solutions and identify new topics for research
  • Engage in constructive reflection on learning and new ideas
  • Communicate and share with others ineffective teams and collaborative activities.

Employers have told us that the `softer skills students sometimes lack when they begin employment are extremely important. Such skills as being able to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, being confident to deal with numbers, interpersonal skills, teamwork, time management, problem-solving and critical thinking are integrated throughout the award. Students will then develop skills and attributes to enhance their employability prospects. Ultimately Business graduates will be 5A*students, who are aware of and understand and appreciate the community in which business is conducted and their role in reflecting and shaping the future agenda of business in practice.

Assessment

An innovative range of assessment design reflects the skills needed to engage in business and includes report presentation through a variety of media, case-study analysis and feedback, reflective portfolios, assignments, research projects, examinations (both open and closed-book) pod-casts and technology-supported presentations, poster presentations, and web-based design tasks. Meaningful and timely feedback enables students to develop confidence in meeting the demands of different approaches to assessment. There are opportunities for formative assessment and feedback, designed to encourage students to reflect and evaluate their contribution and development which should ultimately enable achievement of higher marks at the end of module assessment.

Where possible, and to enhance employer engagement, assessments are work-related, based on real-life situations and scenarios. Assessments enable students to make increasingly effective judgments within their courses of study and also instill confidence in problem-solving and decision-making in professional and employment contexts.
