Introduction
The Human Services degree program of 132 credits is designed to prepare practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and values of the “helping process” directed at individuals, families, groups, communities, selected special populations, and social services support systems. The fundamental principle of practice is to enable individuals to move from external support to personal self-support.
Goal: Prepare human services practitioners who can demonstrate mastery of the generic human services skills, values, and knowledge that facilitate an improved quality of life for New York City residents.
Objectives:
Demonstrate self-awareness and mastery of generic intellectual, affective, and psychomotor-behavioural skills for life-long learning and professional training.
Demonstrate research-based interdisciplinary liberal arts knowledge of social problems, public policies, and programs.
Demonstrate the skills, values, and knowledge in the practice of human services directed at individuals, groups, families, and community organizations.
Demonstrate effective skills and values of human services directed at special client groups in multicultural settings.
NOTE: The Human Services Program (B.S.) requires completion of a minimum of 132 credits of course work with a minimum 2.0 GPA, based on assessment rubrics, exams, or other direct measures of student learning; and completion of the Generic Studies-Liberal Arts and Sciences Core Curriculum.
