Introduction

The BA degree program in Economics, Politics, and Social Thought provides disciplinary training in economics and politics within the framework of a core program in intellectual history that encourages the thoughtful and culturally well-informed application of social-scientific methodology and principle.

Structure

Core
The core program consists of courses that address some of the most important texts and artifacts in the cultural legacies of Europe and the world.

Specialization
All students receive a foundational training in the basic tools of economic analysis and modeling, as well as an introduction to political theory and social and historical studies. At the advanced level, students choose one of the following areas of concentration:

  • Economics
  • Politics

Students complete modules on comparative global issues, access to choice, and decision-making, and on key ideas, movements, methods, and challenges in each field. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on refining writing and developing mathematical and analytical skills.

German Language Study
Language study in German from beginner to advanced level is available throughout the program. All BA in Economics, Politics, and Social Thought candidates must demonstrate intermediate proficiency in German by the end of their second year.

Electives
Electives in studio arts (theater, dance, painting, filmmaking, art production) are available, as is a wide range of electives in philosophy, art history, literature, and social theory.

Study Abroad (optional)
Study abroad in Europe (through the ERASMUS network) or the United States (at Bard College or its affiliated programs and campuses) and around the world (within the Bard Network or through Bard College Berlin's international exchange agreements) is possible in the third year.

Internship (optional)
An internship program supports the undertaking of practical training in the work of political and cultural organizations, public or private, for academic credit. Internships should be undertaken in the third year of the BA program.

BA Thesis
Regular assignment work for seminar classes is designed to ensure that students progress toward successful independent research, reflected in the BA thesis in the fourth year, which is completed under the supervision of an individual faculty member.
