As a student of this program, you’ll be involved with numerous hands-on learning experiences, in addition to a practicum and internship.

This degree integrates the study of history and social sciences with the practical and theoretical knowledge required for teaching. You'll be prepared to teach a wide range of history and social science courses at the middle and high school levels with a BSEd in social science education from Northern. In many schools, the ability to teach multiple subjects is highly valued. Your studies will include a solid core of courses in history, government, and geography. You'll also have the option to take courses in economics, psychology, and sociology. Rounding out this degree are required teaching courses.

Preparing you to work in any fitness and health-related career. As a human performance and fitness major, you’ll be part of a growing program that will help you build a strong science foundation through courses such as anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and exercise physiology.

A major area of study is required if you plan to apply to teach secondary school in South Dakota, and NSU is ready with options to suit your interests and career goals. Choose from the following education areas: art, biology, chemistry, language arts/English, history, mathematics, music, physical education, Spanish and special education.

Preparing you for a rewarding career in K-12 physical education. As a student in our B.S.Ed. Physical Education program, you’ll learn scientific and fitness principles, pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), and curriculum development from our diverse and experienced faculty.

NSU provides hands-on instruction combined with extensive in-classroom experience – including courses that take place at a local elementary school – to prepare you to become an effective and engaging elementary school teacher. In the elementary education program at Northern, you’ll learn to create lessons that actively involve your students, and how to best address a wide variety of learning styles. In our elementary education program, you'll receive a free iPad in your sophomore or junior year, and learn to use it and other technology tools effectively as a teacher. Through a partnership with the Aberdeen School District, several of your elementary education classes will take place at the new Mike Miller Elementary school, where each student has access to an iPad. To further enhance your educational technology skills, the Creation Lab at Northern's Williams Library offers open access to a 3D printer, 3Doodler Pen, Chromebooks, SMARTboard, and AppleTV.

Equip and enrich the artists of tomorrow with an art education degree from NSU. In our program, you’ll learn advanced visual design skills and use traditional studio media and tools, within the enriching context of a liberal arts curriculum. Graduates are prepared to enter the art field as professional K-12 teachers or to attend graduate school.

Northern’s environmental science program merges biological, physical, and information sciences with the study of environmental systems, issues, and solutions to major environmental problems. As an environmental science major at Northern, you'll study the fascinating interrelation between the natural sciences. You'll examine the relationship between living organisms and the ecosystems in which they live, addressing how humans affect the environment and how you can help reduce or even reverse negative impacts.

When you complete the Management Information Systems (MIS) program at NSU, you'll be at the forefront of information systems technology essential to all modern organizations. An MIS degree from Northern will give you a strong background in enterprise systems and robust technology skills.

As part of NSU's preprofessional programs, the study of chemistry provides excellent preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, or chiropractic school admission. It also prepares students to attend graduate school or work in the chemical industry. NSU chemistry students pursuing the chemistry major have the option of taking courses in analytical, biochemistry, organic, chemical education, environmental, and physical chemistry, or material science.

As a student in the NSU biochemistry program, you’ll receive the foundation and skills that will give you an edge and prepare you to succeed in in a host of well-established, continually evolving fields. Biochemistry merges the chemical, biological and physical sciences to explain biological processes on a molecular level, preparing you for immediate employment in medical, industrial, and government positions (scientists, lab technicians, research assistants, and chemists), a professional degree program (medical, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical, genetic counseling, and other clinical or health professions), or a graduate degree program (biochemistry, chemistry, and biology).

NSU's biology program emphasizes hands-on activities and critical thinking to bring you to a better understanding of the study of life. You'll work one-on-one with caring, supportive faculty who encourage independent thinking skills that will prepare you to become a leader in your biological field. Most upper-level courses have no more than 25 students. Northern's biology faculty members teach their own labs - they'll get to know you as a person.

NSU’s management program offered online and on-campus is designed to ensure you’ll be well-equipped for the domestic and international marketplaces.
