Physics is concerned with describing and predicting natural phenomena. Applied physics is concerned with applying physics in technical solutions. Design and construction are important aspects of this. Applied physics is at the heart of society. It forms the basis for many of the products we use in daily life. The program has a strong interdisciplinary orientation, with an emphasis on combinations of subjects: physics with design studies, nanotechnology, new materials and systems, and control engineering Applied physics involves studying not only how phenomena come about, but also how to use them for technical solutions. This BSc (Honours) Mathematics and Physics degree will teach you how to use essential techniques and relevant software. Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics is the study of the laws of nature, utilizing scientific principles, logic, and a bit of imagination to allow for a more complete understanding of the universe. Our Physics with Astrophysics degree has been developed to equip students with the reasoning and analytical skills to tackle problems with no known answers. Astrophysics provides training in space science, Earth observation, and physics of extreme conditions, and this degree aims to develop student's abilities to think on their feet and to think outside the box. The programme is designed to equip graduates with the skills needed to work in the space industry, skills that are also highly transferable to many other sectors.

Physics is the study of the laws of nature that describe the universe we see around us. At JMU, our physics majors have the opportunity to customize their degree programs to suit their interests and career goals. We offer courses that focus on multiple facets of physics, including materials science, computational physics, electronics, and applied nuclear physics. Students are strongly urged to conduct research projects with our faculty, and often present research at professional conferences and produce co-authored publications. Additionally, there are multiple opportunities within the physics and astronomy department for paid research experience.

Develop broad vision and intuition as you probe the principles and properties of matter, space, and time in our bachelor’s program in Physics. You’ll learn to make interdisciplinary connections between the branches of physics—high energy physics, astrophysics, atomic, molecular, and optics physics, condensed matter physics—and other scientific fields.

The study program in BSc in Physics for the full-time training offers a complete education in physics, with special directions particularly in IT in physics and Applied physics (with a strong emphasis on laser physics). The curriculum is organized in modules covering the Introductory courses in nature sciences (24 credits) and Common courses (52 credits) for all physics students (basic courses in mathematics, physics and informatics).

Traditional mathematical physics degrees in Ireland have been narrow in their scope. This course seeks to provide a genuine mixture of the two subjects. In addition to developing core and advanced mathematical skills, training will be provided in fundamental physics spanning mechanics to quantum mechanics, and in state-of-the-art applications of physics such as nanotechnology.

The main aim of the Physical Geography and Oceanography Bachelor’s degree programme in Physical Geography is to prepare highly qualified geophysical sciences specialists with a focus on phenomena and processes occurring in the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and other water bodies and in the atmosphere. Also to provide students with an opportunity to acquire integrated competence in the field of geography. The graduates are excellent specialists who are able to work the intellectual and creative work, to create conditions to gain scientific research-based decisions and apply new technologies to achieve the best problem solutions. Students are provided with an advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills; they gain the opportunity of becoming strategists of new technologies. Graduates will also acquire specific knowledge about the modern monitoring of the oceans and seas, marine economic development, international and national environment protection and sustainable development issues, essential components of the global maritime economy, and their geographical characteristics.

BSc students interested in studying Physics can choose to take Physics as a Single Major, Double Major or Minor. BEd students may choose Physics as their second Major. Other students whose principal interest is not in Physics may, however, be advised or have the option to take Physics courses. This category involves those enrolled in the School's interdisciplinary programmes and the Marine Studies BSc programme. The School also offers one course (PH105: Physics in Today's World) which may be taken as an elective by those students from FST and other Schools with limited prior knowledge of Physics.
