BIU’s Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences offers students biological knowledge and a scientific education based on modern research. Our Biochemistry BSc will give you the skills and knowledge to establish yourself in a range of careers related to biochemistry, including the pharmaceutical, diagnostic and biotechnology industries. Biochemistry is a pivotal degree discipline and a fundamental part of all the biological sciences. It is the study of living systems at the molecular level, and biochemists study the ways in which cells and organisms are formed. This involves examining the structure and function of molecules found in living systems, as well as experimental investigations of the properties of biological systems ranging in complexity from cell extracts to whole organisms, and elucidating the roles of specific genes in the cells in which they are expressed. The foundation of our course is our thriving research in diverse areas of biochemistry, including biotechnology, cancer biology, membrane transport, molecular diagnostics and therapeutics, plant biochemistry, and protein structure. In this degree, you'll gain a sound foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and analytical biochemical techniques. Your laboratory and research skills will be developed throughout your degree, culminating in your final-year project in which you'll undertake original research of your own.

The higher apprenticeship is delivered as a blended course. Most material will be in the form of directed self-learning via the university e-learning platform, Moodle, and face-to-face teaching held over the summer.

The Bachelor's Degree in Biosciences and Biotechnology is an interclass degree: it consists of a common first year, where the student is provided with a solid base in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and cell biology, followed by a second and third year when the student follows either the program leading to the Biology or Biotechnology degree.

Zoology is the study of animals, from the simplest invertebrates to the largest terrestrial or marine mammals. Simple animals often provide models for the study of higher, more complex species (including humans) and help drive basic research that transcends the subject boundaries.

Biophysical chemistry uses physical science to understand complex biological systems. Our biophysical chemistry major is extremely multidisciplinary and designed for intensive hands-on learning. Students in this major will develop a solid foundation in chemistry and physics in order to explore the inner workings of biological systems. Our faculty is dedicated to engaging students outside the classroom in mentored research projects, and students are trained in the use of equipment and instrumentation found in top research laboratories.

The Academic Program in BSc in Biotechnology offered by the Faculty of Pharmacy leads to the degree of Biotechnologist. The program provides a deep theoretical understanding of natural sciences with hands-on experience in cutting-edge technologies in biotechnology. The diploma issued by the Faculty of Pharmacy is accepted by all European Union member states and several other countries. The program aims to educate students to become immediately employable after graduation, hence industrial or research laboratory placements for sufficient work experience are integral parts of the program. Using state-of-the-art laboratory techniques students can also experience laboratory research and have a great variety of further education possibilities to choose from in medical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and food biotechnology.

Loras College Biochemistry program provides students the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in chemical principles and to apply their training in the lab. This foundation enables Biochemistry graduates to pursue a very wide range of options after graduation including graduate school or a chemistry-related field; going directly into the workforce for a career in the chemical industry, government, education, engineering, forensic science, or the law; or entering interdisciplinary fields such as medicine, dentistry, other health professions, education and more.

The BSc program in Agricultural Engineering aims to train agricultural engineers capable of realizing production, leadership, controlling and organizational work in agricultural companies.
