Our Television Production BA is a practice-based course taught by broadcast industry professionals and media theorists, combining critical analysis with hands-on practical skills. Our course focuses on how television programmes are conceived, produced, commissioned and distributed in a digital broadcast and multi-platform environment. You’ll work across a digital workflow supporting single-camera and multi-camera studio production modes and produce programmes across all genres, from documentary and drama series to TV commercials and studio entertainment shows. As well as learning practical skills in editing, camera operations, sound recording, lighting and graphics, you’ll study critical analysis of the ever-changing global broadcast and digital media industries. You’ll work with industry-standard facilities and equipment while being taught by experienced industry professionals and practitioners, including documentary filmmakers, directors, producers and screenwriters. We also host a range of visiting lecturers and guest speakers, from sound designers to investigative journalists and social media strategists.

The BFA degree offers a solid grounding in the creative process and business skills of entertainment, as well as an in-depth specialization in one of the key areas of filmmaking (directing, producing, cinematography, editing, production design, and screenwriting).

At the Bachelor level, work on a short film, a TV commercial, a music video, and a large-scale outside broadcast to create your professional showreel and filmography. Develop your creative expression and technical skills whilst mastering screenwriting, directing, cinematography, motion graphics, and post-production, to launch you into the heart of the industry.

Students majoring in Film and Television have access to a wide variety of courses that carefully integrate hands-on production practice with studies in film history, theory, and the work of major film artists. FTV students are taught best professional practices through small, interactive classes in the Department’s state-of-the-art digital film and television labs and editing suites. Through class projects and internships, students gain experience in screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and direction/performance methodologies for camera and screen, honing their aesthetic and technical skills in film and television production. To fully complement these skills, FTV students are encouraged to minor in Film and Media Studies, which is part of the FTV Department. In addition to traditional three-credit courses, students participate in the Department’s innovative one-credit workshops taught by practicing industry professionals. These courses not only expose students to specialized niches within the profession but also provide students with networking opportunities.

Film and Television Department offers its students a comprehensive education program that incorporates theoretical and practical knowledge required in professional and academic career. Our department aims to provide students the theoretical background, culture, education and skills for creating and analyzing fiction and non-fiction audio-visual products for cinema, television, radio and new media.

The AFDA Postgraduate school is focused on developing innovative research, origination, production, and distribution of entertainment concepts for both local and international markets. Over the last fifteen years, the AFDA Postgraduate School has produced a large network of graduates who have made a significant contribution to the South African entertainment industry. A large percentage of commercials, feature films, television series, music, and retail content is produced by AFDA Honours graduates.

The media & journalism major offers and requires a variety of foundational and skills courses to help prepare students to enter the “real world” of media. The blending of media law and media ethics with hands-on skills is inherent in the courses offered in this major. The television, radio, and digital media track is designed for students planning to work in television (broadcast, cable, satellite, digital, mobile) and/or radio (broadcast, satellite, digital).

BA in Broadcast Production This pathway is for those interested in careers in creative broadcast programme and media making for television, radio, journalism, podcasts and other new and emerging digital media platforms. This degree aims to introduce you to the widest possible experience of modern broadcasting combined with critical thinking and excellent online skills.

The Bachelor's Degree in Film, Television, and Media Studies offers in-depth knowledge of audiovisuals in the digital era, stimulating students’ critical thinking by honing their aesthetic and creative skills. Its goal is to train professionals in audiovisual production and distribution, television, radio, cultural management, audience analysis, and online audiovisual content management.

Develop your creative confidence and ‘voice’ through experimentation and exploration in our purpose-built, industry-standard Minghella Studios, a dynamic collaborative environment in which film, theatre and television makers work alongside each other. You'll have access to three flexible theatre spaces, a multi-camera film and TV studio (featuring Arri Alexa film cameras), a digital cinema, and a dedicated recording studio and mixing suite with state-of-the-art equipment. 

This Film and Television Production Degree will equip you with the varied skillset, experience, and portfolio required to enter, work, and succeed in today’s Film and TV industries. This is a practice-based course that aims to train the complete, versatile, contemporary filmmaker, with a strong academic and theoretical underpinning. 

The Bachelor of Science in film & television equips students to work in various positions within the creative and production teams of film and television. With a strong focus on storytelling, students will learn how to convey their thoughts and ideas in ways that connect with an audience. They will also learn from experienced professors how to take creative ideas and make them flourish.

The mission of the Mass Communication program is to prepare students to be proficient in communicating information and ideas through the utilization of media, to be qualified to hold positions in mass communication, and to gain admission to graduate and professional schools.
