They have a significant influence on the overall quality of life in a variety of ways. Public health practitioners may help design and implement programs related to making healthier choices, such as stopping smoking and exercising more. They help deliver screening and prevention programs to counteract disease, work on local, regional, and national wellness campaigns and look for solutions that provide underserved segments of society with better access to health care.

You will be taught by a dynamic team of academics from diverse professional backgrounds including nursing, social work, psychology, epidemiology, health promotion, sociology and social sciences. The accelerated degree program allows a student to complete a bachelor's degree in public health and the Master of Public Health (MPH) over a five-year period. The first four years consist of undergraduate studies, including up to 15 credit hours of public health graduate level courses taken during the senior year, culminating in the award of a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.

The foundation of Global Public Health is global equity and the acknowledgment that social determinants play a significant role in informing individual behaviors and health choices. The public health major includes the core components of the discipline including epidemiology, social determinants of health, health behavior, biostatistics, program planning, and health policy. Public health students develop and sharpen key analytical, communication, and leadership skills needed to improve health outcomes. Public health is the prevention of illness and promotion of wellness in communities both large and small. The Global and Public Health Sciences (GPHS) major teaches the tools of public health research and action and their application to population health issues in the U.S. and globally. The work of public health professionals is distinct from the work of clinical professionals, who typically treat individuals after they have become sick or injured. Public health actions often involve educational and/or governmental approaches that influence many people simultaneously, for example, to address issues such as obesity and diabetes, food security, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, quality of food, water and air, and access to health care. Sustained improvement of the health of populations often requires a multidisciplinary approach involving the biomedical, behavioral, social, political and environmental sciences, and careful consideration of the importance of cultural and ethical contexts.
