The Faculty of Jewish Studies at Bar-Ilan University is the largest and most varied of its kind in the world and includes nine departments in the different specialties within Jewish Studies. All of these are open to students of the Multidisciplinary Department, which breaks down the traditional boundaries between the various disciplines and brings them together in a program that is rich in content and unique in its variety. Each student in the department is guided in their studies by a senior academic advisor.

The major in East Asian Languages and Literatures provides rigorous training in the study of East Asian languages, literatures, cultures, and thought from ancient times through the present, with a strong focus on the reading and analysis of texts, theater, film, and other forms of media. Students select either the Chinese or the Japanese track but are encouraged to take courses in both tracks to become familiar with East Asian literary culture more broadly. The major is excellent preparation for careers including business, law, academia, foreign service, translation, and journalism that demand advanced linguistic proficiency and analytical sophistication. East Asian Languages and Literatures graduates have gone on to careers in law, business, medicine, academia, film, translation, teaching, and diplomacy.

East Asian Language Studies will provide you with solid training in all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in the two main East Asian languages, namely Chinese and Japanese. In addition to gaining profound knowledge of East Asian cultures, you will also choose to pursue advanced proficiency in one of the languages, and intermediate proficiency in the other.

In the East Asian Studies major, students focus on a country or an area within East Asia and concentrate their work in the humanities or the social sciences. The major offers a liberal education that serves as excellent preparation for graduate study or for business and professional careers in which an understanding of East Asia is essential. The major in East Asian Studies is interdisciplinary, and students typically select classes from a wide variety of disciplines. The proposed course of study must be approved by the director of undergraduate studies (DUS).

East Asian Studies examines the culture, language and history of East Asian civilizations in an interdisciplinary program offering a comprehensive understanding of the rich culture and emerging global power of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Stretching from Libya to Turkey and southward down the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East encompasses: Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, the Gaza Strip, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the West Bank, and Yemen.

Courses in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies cover the major languages and cultural history of East Asia and the Middle East, broadly defined. The major languages offered are Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese and Persian.

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) at Cambridge comprises a range of stimulating courses focused specifically on areas of the world that are not usually studied in depth before coming to university.
