Our unique academic program lets our students engage with exciting new trends in various creative disciplines, popular visual cultures, and cutting-edge design technologies. They begin with a foundation year where students have the opportunity to experience all of our visual disciplines: Graphic Design, Photography, Art Direction, Illustration, and Multimedia, before choosing a major visual subject to take through to their third year. This allows for a unique understanding of visual communication as well as an opportunity for our students to truly curate their learning according to their avenues of talent and interest. We combine this practice with subjects like Marketing, Business Leadership, Discourse, and Visual Studies, ensuring our students are at the forefront of an industry that is constantly evolving. The five majors (Applied Illustration, Art Direction, Graphic Design, Multimedia & Photography) focus on creative and industry-related practical knowledge and skills, with the remaining three components delivering vital context and theory that set our graduates apart in the South African job market.

A degree in Media, Culture and Communication will entail facing the challenge of keeping pace with the latest trends, technologies, and debates. Media, Culture, and communication degrees aim to prepare students for work in media-related industries, and train them to critically analyze the ways in which the media reflects, represents, and influences the world.

Full-time students register for five modules. Part-time students register for all the modules except for the specialization modules and the research essay in the first year. In the second year, part-time students register for the specialization modules and the research essay. All elective modules are not necessarily offered every year.

The purpose of this qualification is to enable students to understand the necessary concepts to build multimedia products and maintain the products. This program is therefore a combination of theory and practice. The explosion of the web, as well as the exponential growth and power of information technology, requires the introduction of this degree following international trends.

A Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media Design prepares students to meet the needs of the digital age as designers of content, systems, and products, where text, image, video, audio, graphics and animation converge. Starting from a generalized approach, students learn specializations in interaction design or digital video. In Digital Media Design, students engage with and apply digital technologies innovatively, in order to design products to communicate and enhance life experiences.

The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts Honors in Design (Multimedia) prepares students for research-based postgraduate study and entry into a design career by enabling students to produce creative solutions to complex problems within a specialist area of design and to conduct and report on research under supervision.

This package contextualizes the South African publishing industry, with specific applications to book publishing and corporate publishing. The objectives are to equip students with background knowledge on the industry, role players, and trends, as well as with specific skills linked to the publishing value chain. These skills include the commissioning of manuscripts aimed at specific markets; the management of the design, reproduction, and printing phase; copy-editing and proofreading; financial and marketing management. Students are empowered to act as responsible information intermediaries who can add value to publications during the various phases of the publishing process.

The major in Media Studies is designed to help students develop the analytical, critical and creative communication skills required to engage meaningfully with a wide range of media. Building on a robust understanding of media’s political, economic, technological, social and historical contexts, each student will find his/her unique voice through real-world experiences provided by contact with industry professionals and practical projects.

Multimedia Design at GDC is concerned primarily with interactive design and motion graphics.

This programme enables graduates to become community leaders through a wide variety of media projects (e.g. NGO, churches, production companies, advertising agencies). We aim to produce media workers who approach their task from deep Christian convictions and acquire the theology, biblical studies and media knowledge, tools and skills that these studies can provide.
