Our Biochemistry BSc will give you the skills and knowledge to establish yourself in a range of careers related to biochemistry, including the pharmaceutical, diagnostic and biotechnology industries. Biochemistry is a pivotal degree discipline and a fundamental part of all the biological sciences. It is the study of living systems at the molecular level, and biochemists study the ways in which cells and organisms are formed. This involves examining the structure and function of molecules found in living systems, as well as experimental investigations of the properties of biological systems ranging in complexity from cell extracts to whole organisms, and elucidating the roles of specific genes in the cells in which they are expressed. The foundation of our course is our thriving research in diverse areas of biochemistry, including biotechnology, cancer biology, membrane transport, molecular diagnostics and therapeutics, plant biochemistry, and protein structure. In this degree, you'll gain a sound foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and analytical biochemical techniques. Your laboratory and research skills will be developed throughout your degree, culminating in your final-year project in which you'll undertake original research of your own.

The aim of BSc studies in biotechnology is to acquire basic knowledge of the molecular basis of biological phenomena and processes through learning mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics, as well as molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, the biology of the cell and biotechnology, and acquisition of deeper knowledge in the biochemistry of proteins, carbohydrates and lipid compounds, their structures, and functions, as well as their metabolisms.

The Bachelor’s programme in Life Science focuses on life, bridging chemistry and biology to explore living systems. Our teachers have close links to outstanding research in areas such as microbiology, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, infectious medicine, and plant and forest biotechnology. After completing the programme, you can call yourself a chemist, molecular biologist or both, as you have the opportunity to finish your education with a double Bachelor's degree in both these subject areas.

The BA Animal Science (top-up) is designed to be a progression route for students who have completed the HND in Applied Animal Science or an equivalent award. On this programme, you have access to well-equipped laboratories and an animal centre. You will have as much practical involvement with animals as possible and several trips and activities are organised each year.

The Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology bachelor degree programme prepares you for one of the fastest growing fields of research in the world.

The Equine Studies program at Midway provides students with the essential skills they need to enter the broad equine industry or prepare for graduate school. Equine science degree students have opportunities throughout the program to work with a variety of breeds. Students are also able to perform tasks of varying levels in assisting with managing our farm and herd. Students learn basic horse handling techniques as well as barn and farm management principles and practices. Through academic preparation in theories and methods of equine characteristics and needs, students acquire the basis on which to make decisions affecting horse care.

The study programme in Bachelor in Bioinformatics provides basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, computer science and natural sciences, enabling graduates to work in the field of information technology, especially in institutes and enterprises specialising in the analysis and application of biological data and biotechnologies.
