The B.A. program in linguistics in our department is designed to give students a solid background in the core areas of phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, as well as in more applied areas such as psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. Studies in the department take place in English, but this is not the only language being studied; the approach in the department is that of general linguistics which aims to study human language and the human linguistic capacity.

Language shapes our world and communicates knowledge. Communication through language and talk is universal across all cultures and has allowed humans to develop thoughts and share information. The study of literature allows us to gain deep knowledge of other cultures and to develop analytical skills useful in a range of careers and professions.

This BA (Honours) in English Language degree explores human communication by focusing on the English language, its history, diversity and flexibility. You’ll learn what distinguishes machine language from human language and how people adapt and change their ways of communicating in multilingual and multicultural contexts.

The program is offered by the School of English and American Studies. The program can be completed either as a major or a minor program, the latter is only available for students who study in other major programs at ELTE. Students taking the program as a major opt for either the English or the American track at the end of the first term. The three-year-long program does not provide teaching qualifications.

The Bachelor in English Philology programme offers students the solid written and spoken communication skills required for workplace success in English (C1–C2), as well as the fundamentals of English linguistics, literature and the culture of English-speaking countries.

Students work in an international and intercultural context in order to increase their knowledge of the language, literature, history, politics, art cinema etc. of several English-speaking countries (Great Britain, the United States, Ireland, Canada etc.) They also choose options which will prepare them for the world of work (eg. Business English, Didactics of English, Interpretation etc.) Students must also take classes in a second modern language and may study a third one if they wish.

Fresh graduates find employment in media and journalism, retail, human resources, public relations, marketing and advertising, publishing, education, and the civil service, where a high level of competence in English and professional communication is needed.

The Department of English Language Teaching aims to raise teachers who have acquired an advanced level of English proficiency as well as a high level of understanding of the knowledge and skills required for the language education field.

English Philology Programme aims at preparing English philology specialists with a broad range of knowledge and competencies.

The Department of Education provides students with an opportunity to gain a firm foundation in the elements of secondary education. As a student in the Thiel College Education Department, students will experience high-quality education programs based on the latest “Effective Schools” research that includes instructional teaching strategies based on the work of Robert Marzano, Jay McTighe, Grant Wiggins, Charlotte Danielson, and other current leaders in the field of education. Work with students to improve their written communications skills and help them develop both an understanding of and a love for English literature and writing.

The curriculum of the English Language and Literature Department includes the study of mythology, British society and culture, and literary genres and periods ranging from Old and Middle English to the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries.
