The concentration in Chinese prepares students for teaching careers at the secondary school level, graduate study in Chinese, and research and professional work in government and private enterprises. Language majors with Chinese concentration are encouraged to complete a minor or, if possible, a second major in another field.

Chinese language and culture are rich and diverse, reflecting thousands of years of history, tradition, and civilization. As one of the world's oldest continuous cultures, China has made significant contributions to literature, philosophy, art, cuisine, and science, influencing the development of neighboring countries and cultures in East Asia and beyond.

The Chinese program offers students a range of courses and activities which impart an understanding of the culture and civilization of China. With the completion of three years of the language, students will be prepared to handle various types of colloquial Chinese. Most majors pursue advanced studies in Chinese linguistics or literature, while others combine an interest in China with a degree in business, education, engineering or journalism.
