With their broad understanding of culture, its drivers and its interpretations, students of Cultural Studies are students of the workings of the world. Combining the strengths of the social sciences and the humanities, Cultural Studies draws on methods and theories used in traditional disciplines such as Literary Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Economy, Psychoanalysis and Religious Studies. Cultural Studies also draws on theories and methods from the growing fields of Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Feminist Studies and Media Studies. By working across the boundaries of these fields, students of Cultural Studies can address new questions and problems arising in today's world.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Criminal Justice in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) at the University of the Incarnate Word develops ethical, responsible, well-informed and deeply conscientious criminal justice professionals and justice-minded individuals for a wide variety of professions or for law school. Law enforcement, social work, corrections, security, intelligence, government, education and the legal profession – there are many fields that a graduate of a criminal justice program can pursue. The study of criminal justice gives students insight into the many facets of the justice system and proficiency in critical data, research and analytical skills. UIW’s Criminal Justice program also emphasizes a deep understanding of issues related to social justice through innovative courses that are not available at many other universities, on topics such as restorative justice, and issues that impact specific or vulnerable groups.

The Communication Arts program provides rigorous and engaging courses from experienced scholars, educators, and industry professionals that prepare students for diverse careers in media and communication. Specifically, our program develops technical and practical skills in production, broadcasting, film, journalism, and strategic and corporate communication. The purpose of the major in Human Resources is to prepare students for challenges in the workplace related to managing and developing people. This includes those interested in HR careers as well as those who desire to improve their ability to solve problems, improve processes and enhance the effectiveness of people in organizations. In addition to developing competencies in key HR activities (staffing; training and development; performance management; compensation and benefits; legal compliance), the student will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, technology and business communication skills.
