The major in Asian and Asian American studies offers three tracks: Asian American and diaspora studies, Asia comparative, and South Asia.

Students who pursue the India Studies Bachelor of Arts degree will gain advanced understanding of the culture, literature, arts, philosophy, socio-political and historical dimensions of this dynamic region, in addition to language expertise. You will learn from experts in a wide range of geographical areas, including Bengal, northern India, Tamil Nadu, the Tibetan plateau, and Maharashtra. Your studies will span a wide range of disciplines, including South Asian religion and history to contemporary Indian politics, law, literature, business, and culture.

As an Asian Studies minor at Mercer University, you will explore the culture, history, politics, people, and beliefs of the Asian culture. You will be challenged and stretched by our curriculum, and you will discover the mysteries of Asia. To fully immerse yourself in the Asian culture, we encourage you to sign up for a study abroad experience. You will witness the information in your textbook come to life, and you will earn three credit hours toward your Asian Studies minor. Students are encouraged to take advantage of Mercer's Chinese Language and Culture Study Abroad Program at Nanjing University.

In consultation with our faculty and staff advisors, students in the major have the exciting opportunity to select an emphasis or specialty organized around our faculty's core areas of intellectual focus including Immigration, Labor, and Transnationalism; Visual, Literary, and Cultural Studies; and Public/Community-Engaged Scholarship. The department is also developing an emphasis on Health through its emerging partnerships.

You’ll develop the knowledge and language skills you’ll need to work in East Asian countries like China and Japan as you explore the cultural realities that shape these societies to deepen your understanding of them. North Central’s East Asian Studies program supports students through its committed faculty, well-established language curricula, and wide range of short- and long-term study abroad options.

The Asian Studies program seeks to cultivate an understanding and appreciation of Asia's diverse cultures and contemporary social, political, business, and economic issues. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach by combining the study of languages, humanities, and the social sciences. Such studies not only provide students with knowledge of Asia and Asian language skills but also help students to critically examine the values of their own societies or cultures.
