Siena's American Studies program allows the inquisitive student to explore the United States through a multitude of disciplines such as history, literature, art, sociology, political science, religion, gender and multicultural studies. The N.A.S. program is an interdisciplinary program focused on the Indigenous peoples of the Americas with an emphasis on the Plains Indians, particularly the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara. The curriculum provides an interdisciplinary and scholarly approach to Native American Studies from a Native perspective.

The Afro-American Studies program's undergraduate degree prepares the recipient for successful careers devoted to an understanding and the uplifting of African communities locally, nationally and globally. The Department of Afro-American Studies' Undergraduate Program exists as part of the Social Science Division in the College of Arts & Sciences. As part of the revolutionary movement of the Civil Rights Era in the United States, the program is grounded in the need to advance the interests of the African World including Afro-America, Africa, and the Afro-Caribbean. In this regard, the concerns of the the department are local, national and international.

The Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies investigates the historical and contemporary experiences of Africana peoples and how they are shaped by gender, class, race and global conditions. Students choose from one of three emphases: African American History, Culture and Aesthetics; Comparative Global African Diaspora; or Performance, Media, and Digital Africana Studies. This interdisciplinary major gives students essential professional skills applicable to many careers, including the ability to understand people from any background; writing; critical thinking; public speaking; creativity; leadership; and initiative. Classes focus on literature, history, culture, film, technology, arts, politics and more.

Students who pursue the India Studies Bachelor of Arts degree will gain advanced understanding of the culture, literature, arts, philosophy, socio-political and historical dimensions of this dynamic region, in addition to language expertise. You will learn from experts in a wide range of geographical areas, including Bengal, northern India, Tamil Nadu, the Tibetan plateau, and Maharashtra. Your studies will span a wide range of disciplines, including South Asian religion and history to contemporary Indian politics, law, literature, business, and culture.

As an Asian Studies minor at Mercer University, you will explore the culture, history, politics, people, and beliefs of the Asian culture. Author Dorothy West wrote, “To know how much there is to know is the beginning of learning to live.” As an MSU Denver Africana Studies major, you will come to learn “how much there is to know” about the global African experience — and in the process, come to understand more about the world and how you want to contribute to it. By combining the study of history, literature and the social sciences with a focus on Black communities worldwide, MSU Denver’s Africana Studies program will illuminate the profound influences people of African descent have had on civilization. As part of your in-depth exploration of Africana Studies, you will complete a capstone research course/seminar, receive opportunities for internships, travel study and relevant campus leadership experiences.

Africana Studies is a liberal arts program offering a BA chelor of Arts in Africana Studies and a Minor in Africana Studies. This program provides all students with the opportunity to study the history, culture, and lived experiences of people of African descent–on the African continent and throughout the world. Students will study the influence of Africa and people of African descent on the world-at-large, learn interdisciplinary methods to investigate the social construction of race and racism, and practice research and problem-solving skills. The Africana Studies curriculum encourages the development of critical thinking skills while challenging students to explore new ideas, seek new connections, and become actively engaged in the gloBA l community.

In the East Asian Studies major, students focus on a country or an area within East Asia and concentrate their work in the humanities or the social sciences. The major offers a liberal education that serves as excellent preparation for graduate study or for business and professional careers in which an understanding of East Asia is essential. The major in East Asian Studies is interdisciplinary, and students typically select classes from a wide variety of disciplines. The proposed course of study must be approved by the director of undergraduate studies (DUS).

American Studies graduates are prepared for a broad array of occupations. Recently our graduates have entered jobs in museums, libraries, social policy, government, politics, journalism and education. Many have entered graduate work in American studies or disciplines in their concentrations. The African and African American Studies program promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the history, culture, and identity of Africans and African Americans. Students may pursue African and African American Studies as a second major alongside a primary major in Fulbright College. Students in any college may declare a minor. Advice on suitable primary majors to be taken with an African and African American Studies second major may be obtained from the program director of African and African American Studies.
