First-year students in all degree programs offered by the Department of Communication, Media, and Film Studies are encouraged to explore courses in a variety of areas. It is recommended that a first-year program include at least two of the following:

In addition, students should also select at least 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) from the Faculty of Arts.
