As you move into your second and third years, you’ll study more independently as you start to specialise and undertake industry placements. The course changes as you learn more.

Alongside your foundational and technical skills, you’ll also study employability skills subjects that will give you the aptitudes relevant to any job – such as communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. So you’ll graduate with the ultimate portfolio of skills that employers need. How do we know employers need them? We got them to help us develop the course.
A qualification at every step
As you complete each year of study, you gain a qualification. After the first year, you can receive a Diploma of Information Technology; after the second, an Associate Degree in Information Technology. So, if you achieve a diploma and then want to work for a year when you return, you’ll go straight into the associate degree year, with credit for your completed diploma. You can also choose to fast-track your degree by studying across all three sessions in a year.

Specialisations
You can choose any of the following specialisations depending on your career goals and interests. All students must choose the required eight subjects from the list of subjects given in each specialisation. Subjects in each specialisation are grouped to build the knowledge area relevant to the particular specialisation in IT.
Cyber security
Learn how to identify and defend organisations and individuals against cyber-attacks, as well as educate users about best practices for avoiding attacks. Cyber security is one of the world’s fastest-growing industries – this specialisation gives you the skills to work at its cutting edge.
Software Design and Development
This specialisation is for students who are interested in computer programming and software design and development. The specialisation begins with the basic programming principles and then discusses the advanced professional programming concepts for the production of quality software. Students taking this specialisation also learn fundamental mobile applications development concepts.
Network Engineering
This specialisation is for students who are interested to build their careers in computer networking and network engineering. The specialisation begins with the fundamental computer networking concepts and then discussed advanced topics such as routing and switching and network design. Advanced topics related to networking such as virtualisation, network security and IT infrastructure management are also discussed in this specialisation.
Web Development
Explore web page design, web programming and usability principles to ensure the very best user experience. Design and develop web pages and e-commerce systems to ensure that any organisation or business – large or small – remains competitive and viable.
Subjects
For each 8-point subject, you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, residential schools, or examinations.
If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of the approved course design.
The course consists of fourteen core subjects, one restricted elective chosen from two subjects, a specialisation of eight subjects and five unrestricted electives or a minor sequence. All subjects are 8 points unless otherwise indicated.

Unrestricted Electives
Students must choose five unrestricted electives by completing:
- A minor in another discipline area and one unrestricted elective or
- Five unrestricted electives.
An unrestricted elective is any standard undergraduate subject offered provided prerequisites and enrolment restrictions have been met.
Career Opportunities
As an IT professional, you could be involved in developing business protocols and processes such as databases and backup systems, and computer applications to support these. Positions exist in large or small companies, or you could provide services on a consultancy basis.

Develop websites and mobile applications or keep projects running on time.
Manage and protect networks and systems
This course will prepare you for various roles, such as network engineer, systems architect, systems administrator, systems analyst and cyber security specialist.
Work in IT support
Provide technical support, troubleshooting and fixing software and hardware.
