Program Description

The Department of Computer Science seeks to establish, maintain, and advance a broad understanding of computer science in order to fulfil the academic and professional goals. The department ensures that students have a solid foundation in the core concepts, equip them with problem-solving skills, and prepare them for lifelong learning in the discipline.

The objectives of the program:

  1. Provide students with the fundamental skills and knowledge that all computing students must possess.
  2. Guide students to integrate theory and practice, recognize the importance of abstraction, and to appreciate the value of good design.
  3. Meet relevant trends in the evolution of the discipline of computer science that became apparent.
  4. Prepare graduates to succeed in a rapidly changing field.
  5. Provide students with the flexibility to work across many disciplines.

- Student Outcomes

Through the variety of courses and projects, the program will enable students to attain, by the time of graduation:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of computing and mathematics appropriate to the discipline
  2. An ability to analyze a problem, identify and define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution
  3. An ability to design, implement, and evaluate a computer-based system, process, component, or program to meet desired needs
  4. An ability to function effectively on teams to accomplish a common goal
  5. An understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues and responsibilities
  6. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  7. An ability to analyze the local and global impact of computing on individuals, organizations, and society
  8. Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in continuing professional development
  9. An ability to use current techniques, skills, and tools necessary for computing practice.
  10. An ability to apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the modelling and design of computer-based systems in a way that demonstrates comprehension of the tradeoffs involved in design choices.
  11. An ability to apply design and development principles in the construction of software systems of varying complexity.

Facilities

Students of the computer science program in partnership with the computer information system, management information systems, and network and security programs use five computer labs equipped with about 200 computers. This includes teaching labs associated with the basic courses such as data structures and principles of programming. Further, the students use these labs to practice training on tools associated with advanced courses.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning methods adopted in the Computer Science program relies primarily on lectures, homework assignments, term projects, discussion, students presentations and participating in programming contests. All of these methods using modern technology such as modern software, PowerPoint, and Moodle, and social networking sites like FACEBOOK discussion groups.

Coursework and Assessment

Assessment criteria include:

  1. Exams - quizzes, first, second and final
  2. Course projects and presentations
  3. Homework assignments

The weights of these different activates depends on the nature of the course.
