In this English-taught Bachelor’s degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management, students learn to analyze problems and develop, design and apply solutions. A technical solution is only useable if you have thoroughly tested its feasibility. What is that new product going to cost? Will it fit in the production line? What do the company’s employees think of it? And the customers?
The degree program is offered by the Faculty of Science and Engineering so you can be sure of lots of course units in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In addition, you will follow course units in business studies, management, and logistics. Your technical know-how and your management insights will prepare you for jobs where technology and management meet. Embedding in business and society is a key element of this degree program.

The Groningen science and engineering programs stand out for their academic excellence. The Industrial Engineering & Management degree program consists of one third business course units and two thirds technological course units.
First-year course units are introducing programming, simulation, and modeling related to designing products and production processes, but you will also learn the chemical and physical aspects of materials and molecules. In the business management courses units, you will learn the basics of management accounting and supply chain management. Next to the course units, learning communities are organized to offer study-related and personal support under the supervision of experienced student-coaches. Further in the program, you choose a specific industrial area, in the field of chemical engineering, biotechnology, control engineering or manufacturing. Therefore, you will specialize in a type of production, such as continuous production (petrol, medicines) or individually produced units (cars, aircraft, consumer products). You will complete your Bachelor's with a final project in which you will solve a concrete technical problem for a business. Gifted and motivated students can follow an extracurricular program in the Honours College.
An internship is currently integrated into the Master's degree of IEM. In the near future, we may add the opportunity to also carry out your Bachelor's project abroad (eg China). During the IEM Master's degree, you will have the opportunity to do a research project for several months at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. Our choice of industry partners ranges from large multinationals (such as Shell, Philips, Unilever) to dynamic small and medium enterprises in the Groningen area.

The Dutch government intends to halve the statutory tuition fees for specific groups of first-year bachelor's students starting from the 2018/19 academic year.
Once you have completed the three-year Bachelor's program and have your degree, you may continue with the Master's degree program to study your field in greater depth. A Bachelor's degree in IEM qualifies you for the Master's degree program in IEM at Groningen or the equivalent at another university. A graduate in industrial engineering and management is at home in organizations that focus on innovation.
A Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management will open many doors to you in many different companies and organizations, from multinationals to consultancy firms, in the Netherlands and further afield.
Your technical know-how and your management insights will prepare you for jobs where technology and management meet. You will feel at home in companies and organizations interested in innovation, searching for new opportunities by integrating technologies.
Product manager and process technologist are jobs often offered to our graduates. You could also work in a hospital, investigating how to use research equipment better. Some graduates end up in the service sector or working for the government. Virtually all of our graduates find jobs immediately after graduating.
Examples include manufacturing (from cars to razors), as well as the chemical and pharmaceutical industries where you could end up as a process technologist, for example for Shell or DSM. Because of your business training, you can quickly find work in management positions. One interesting field is our future energy supply. Think of companies developing and improving solar panels, or generating electricity from biomass. You don’t have to stand in a lab yourself as long as you are able to translate the results of research into useful information for the rest of the company.
