Bachelor’s Degree Program
The BA in Illustration is aimed at those who want to draw passionately and think pictorially, who want to shape content, and communicate coherently and informatively.
This course, which includes both informative illustration and media illustration, qualifies illustrators to work in all kinds of media companies. It also qualifies candidates to set up their own businesses, specializing in areas like the book industry, cultural institutions, scientific institutions, advertising agencies and publishing. The diverse field of professional illustration also requires refined editing, consulting and organizational skills, for which the students, with their refined technical abilities, distinguished critical skills and creative expertise, will be especially qualified.
Admission + Funding
Application requires a portfolio of about 20 works presented at a personal interview. We avoid giving any thematic guidelines. Your portfolio and CV should provide insight into your individual creative development. You should also include a written proposal outlining your work and process. A general university entrance qualification (e.g. secondary school diploma) or other proof of professional qualifications and experience in accordance with section 11 of the Berlin legislation governing higher education (BerlHG) is an entry prerequisite. If you are unable to come in for an interview, you have the option of sending us your work via the internet.

The costs of the BA Illustration program are covered by tuition fees. The fees are €4,140 per semester, or €690 in monthly rates. There is a one-time registration fee of €200. All examination fees are already included in the tuition fees. The B.A. programs are recognized by the German Law on Support for Education and training (BAföG.) Students can apply for educational loans from banks as well as from the Reconstruction Credit Institute (KfW) to fund their studies. A discounted student ticket for the Berlin public transport system (VBB) is included, in accordance with the conditions of the VBB. The Design Akademie Berlin regularly awards full scholarships.
