Often described as the “people-oriented” engineering profession, industrial engineering combines your abilities in math, logic, and organization with a core understanding of business objectives to streamline operations and conserve resources.

The industrial engineering (IE) program at M.S.O.E. offers a student-centered, interactive learning environment, with a hands-on orientation and practical industry-based project experiences. Industrial engineers combine their logic and engineering skills with their business knowledge and communication skills to help organizations run more efficiently.

Companies are facing competition from around the globe like at no other time in history. Any organization that is able to reduce operating costs, manufacturing time and lost productivity could significantly improve its standing. M.S.O.E.’s IE graduates learn how to identify and implement such improvements in the workplace. As a result, they are aggressively pursued by a diverse array of employers in manufacturing and service industries such as consulting, healthcare, logistics, and retail.

The results

The placement rate for M.S.O.E. industrial engineering graduates was 100% in 2014-15 and graduates enjoyed an average starting salary of $59,605.

The field

Industrial engineers determine the most effective ways for an organization to use its resources—people, machines, materials, methods and procedures, information and energy. They are often in charge of quality control. They work in a wide variety of settings, from manufacturing to healthcare, retail, government and more.

Program Educational Objectives

Program educational objectives are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the academic program is preparing the graduates to achieve. M.S.O.E.’s IE program is committed to producing baccalaureate engineers who, within five years after graduation, will:

  • demonstrate management and leadership skills, including negotiating with and influencing others, and leading a project team.
  • demonstrate problem-solving skills, utilizing relevant data-driven IE methods.
  • uphold ethical standards and contribute to the broader engineering community.
  • drive organizational improvement efforts, providing training, mentoring or subject matter expertise to others.

  • have a sense of self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, and readiness for change.

Student Outcomes

Student outcomes are narrower statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. At the conclusion of the industrial engineering program at M.S.O.E., the student will have the ability to:

  • apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
  • design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  • design a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.
