Receive both your bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering in just five years. M.S.O.E. is the only university in the state to offer a five-year, freshman-to-master’s program in civil engineering

At M.S.O.E., civil engineering coursework provides a broad-based education touching on each of the traditional areas within the civil engineering field: structural engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, transportation, construction, surveying and geotechnical engineering. Students will then gain in-depth proficiency and design skills in one of these three areas:

  • Structural engineering: Design the structures associated with buildings, bridges, dams and other infrastructure elements
  • Environmental engineering: Design systems for the production of potable water, the treatment, disposal, and reuse of wastewater, air permitting and air pollution control, management of solid and hazardous wastes, and contamination remediation
  • Water resources engineering: Design systems to manage natural water resources, including potable water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, stormwater conveyance systems, and the design of groundwater wells
  • Construction Management: Estimate, schedule, and manage the construction of civil engineering projects involving public infrastructure such as highways, bridges, and water treatment plants and more

For students with an interest in construction engineering, elective coursework can be taken from M.S.O.E.’s nationally-renowned construction management program.

There is no better time than now to pursue a career in civil engineering. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that civil engineers in America will experience employment growth of 24 percent in the next decade, fueled by a significant need for investment in America’s infrastructure. Because you’ll finish M.S.O.E.’s program with a bachelor’s and master’s degree, you’ll be fully prepared to hit the ground running.

The results

The C.V.E. program is new, therefore placement rates do not exist yet. However, the projection for employment is outstanding, like all other M.S.O.E. degree programs. Entry-level civil engineers can expect annual salaries in the mid $50,000 range.

The field

Civil engineers are responsible for the design and construction of the infrastructure necessary to support the civilized society. This includes buildings in which we live and work, transportation systems such as roads, railroads and airports, facilities to manage our natural water resources, and systems to collect, treat, and dispose of wastewater and solid wastes.

Civil engineers generally work indoors in offices. However, they may spend some time outdoors at construction sites to monitor operations or solve problems at the site.

You may want to consider C.V.E. if you

  • Are able to plan, direct and control the activities and work of others
  • Are able to do mathematics and detailed work with accuracy
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills
  • Are able to visualize drawings or pictures as 3-D objects
  • Enjoy working in a team environment

Curriculum Year by Year

Freshman Year

Gain a solid foundation in calculus, chemistry and construction basics your freshman year.

Junior Year

Begin takes courses related to the specialty area of your choice – structural engineering, environmental engineering or water-resources engineering. In addition, learn some business basics like how to lead project teams and management principles.

Sophomore Year

Learn more about factors that impact structures, including materials, forces, and geophysics. You’ll also hone your written and oral communication skills the sophomore year.

Senior Year

Put your classroom knowledge to the test as you and your team work on your senior design project. You’ll also start to take some master’s level courses as you prepare for your fifth year.

Fifth Year

Complete master’s level courses to this year to graduate with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering. You’ll also complete a Capstone design project.

Program Educational Objectives

Program educational objectives are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years of graduation. The program objectives of the Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Civil Engineering (C.V.E.) program are as follows:

  • Graduates of the C.V.E. program who choose to pursue registration as a professional engineer or certification as a professional construction manager will, after attaining the required years of work experience stipulated by the relevant licensing board, achieve that distinction.
  • Graduates of the C.V.E. program will pursue opportunities to advance their technical and professional skills through life-long learning.
  • Graduates of the C.V.E. program will demonstrate a commitment to their profession and to their community by participating in and providing leadership for professional societies and/or public service activities.
  • Graduates of the C.V.E. program will be able to evaluate complex systems or processes within realistic constraints such as customary standards of practice, costs, and sustainability.
  • Graduates of the C.V.E. program who choose to do so will be able to move into advanced management positions, having the business, communications, leadership, and teamwork skills required.
  • Graduates of the C.V.E. program will have the ability to determine appropriate courses of action in situations involving conflicting professional and ethical interests.

Student Outcomes

Student outcomes are narrower statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. The student outcomes of the Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Civil Engineering (C.V.E.) program are as follows:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  4. An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  5. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  7. An ability to communicate effectively
  8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context
  9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning
  10. A knowledge of contemporary issues
  11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
  12. Explain basic concepts in business, specifically in the areas of project management, leadership, finance, and economics
  13. Explain basic concepts in law and public policy, and develop recommendations on issues of public policy associated with the civil engineering profession
  14. Demonstrate the ability to apply masters-level knowledge in one area of specialization
  15. Participate in professional society and community service activities
  16. An ability to (1) explain the importance of professional licensure, and (2) pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam prior to graduation
