Course details

Civil engineering is a rewarding profession with engineers increasingly working in multidisciplinary teams. This practical course will ensure you have the technical and management capabilities to contribute effectively to a wide range of environments.

Your course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year, should you choose to take one. You will also be supported in recording your initial professional development for members of the accrediting institutions.

Accredited IEng degree - Accredited IEng (Full)

This degree is accredited by the JBM as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). The JBM consists of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE).

The course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year. This provides you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace which will help you apply for jobs when you graduate.

You will also be supported in recording your initial professional development for members of the accrediting institutions.

To broaden your industry knowledge the course team also arrange regular personal development sessions. These are generally provided by leading industry professionals and will assist you in choosing an appropriate area of civil engineering to enter on graduation. We also have close links with the Institution of Civil Engineers and host a number of regional events for you to attend.

Entry requirements

UCAS Tariff Points 88 points required. (Minimum 64 from two A Levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies. This must include two science or numerate subjects. If you are studying Biology, Chemistry or Physics to meet this requirement you must also achieve a `Pass' in the practical assessment, where that practical assessment is separated (from 2017).

Additional Requirements:

GCSEs:

GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade C or above (Grade 4 for those sitting their GCSE from 2017 onwards) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy/Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs.

ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA:

Pass overall with a minimum of 88 UCAS tariff points. Must include a minimum of 15 Merits from Maths or numerate subject and 15 Merits in a scientific subject.

SCOTTISH AWARDS:

Minimum of 5 subjects at Grade B at Higher Level.

IRISH LEAVING CERTIFICATE:

Minimum of 5 subjects at Grade C1 or above at Higher Level of which at least 3 must be at B2.

LEVEL 5 OR 6 ENTRY:

Level 5 Entry: Applicants should have an HNC (pass) in a civil engineering discipline.

Level 6 Entry: Applicants should have an HND (pass) in a civil engineering discipline.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.

International Baccalaureate: 24 Points

IELTS:

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example, completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Job Prospects

As a graduate engineer, you could work for consultants, contractors, local authorities or government agencies. You will be able to contribute to the design, construction, and maintenance of a variety of infrastructure projects. You could also specialize in areas such as structures, transportation, water supply, and treatment or power generation and supply. Should you want to further your studies, you could progress on to an accredited technical postgraduate course.

Fees & funding

UK & EU 2018/19

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2018/19 is £9250. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation.

Educational visits - The cost of these trips covers travel, accommodation, and subsistence. The price varies year by year and attendance is optional.

Study materials - We provide core materials during your studies and you may choose to purchase additional materials. This is not compulsory and will depend upon the projects you undertake.

International 2018/19

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2018/19 is £12000. The amount you will pay is fixed at this level for each year of your course.

Based at our City Campus, only a short walk from Leeds city center, Northern Terrace is home to our School of Built Environment & Engineering.

Library and online resources

Our Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing you with access to specialist books and journals, learning spaces, computers, multimedia facilities and media equipment hire. Tens of thousands of our Library's digital resources, including ebooks, ejournals, and databases, can be accessed online at a time and place to suit you.
