Biology is in essence the study of life which encompasses a spectrum of species ranging from the simplest single-celled organism right up to the complexity of the human form. It can be studied at several levels for example focus may be placed on molecular interactions at a sub-cellular level or alternatively cellular interactions at a tissue level. Biology therefore encompasses many academic disciplines for example, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and molecular genetics all of which research life forms at the cellular and molecular level whilst physiology and evolution explore life on a multicellular scale.

This degree therefore offers you a diverse choice of modules. You begin the course with an introduction to the areas that underpin the fundamentals of Biology, however, the flexible nature of the course enables you to transfer to one of our more specialised degree programmes after your first year. For example, the BSc (Hons) Biology (Molecular and Cellular Biology) pathway focuses predominantly on the human form whereby a better understanding of the nature and origins of genetic variation allows us to probe into the genetic basis of both common and rare disease susceptibility. This work is pointing the way to possible new treatments and novel diagnostic approaches, as well as shedding light on evolution. On the other hand the BSc (Hons) Biology (Microbiology) pathway is designed to give a broad appreciation of the biology of organisms of microscopic size drawing on the mammalian immune response to infection whilst considering their many positive roles in industry now and for the future.

What can this course lead to?

Graduates are ideally suited to sectors including the food, water, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, as well as careers in hospital and government laboratories, teaching or postgraduate research. The skills and knowledge developed also open the door to general graduate opportunities such as teaching, finance, IT and management.

Course summary

Biology is in essence the study of life and as such encompasses many academic fields that may be regarded as individual disciplines. For example microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology. This modern degree programme is specifically designed to promote an awareness of the application of biological knowledge to human health and welfare, and equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in a continually changing dynamic subject.

Case studies

It is important to take learning out of the traditional classroom setting, for the students to simulate real life and, above all, enjoy the learning experience. One of the many examples where this is implemented is the module Microbial Biotechnology which incorporates a practical laboratory-based project as one the main pieces of assessment. This project is based on current, topical research into the use of microbes as potential pharmaceutical agents allowing you to gain experience in laboratory research, engage in scientific writing and challenge current findings.

Selection criteria

240 UCAS points which includes grade C in Biology at A-Level or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers etc.

Also to include GCSE at Grade C or equivalent Level 2 qualifications to include Maths, English and Science at Grade C or above.
